Americans Throw Out 40 Percent Of Their Food, Which Is Terrible For The Climate

Americans Throw Out 40 Percent Of Their Food, Which Is Terrible For The Climate :

vegandailynews:

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency announced their plan to tackle food waste in America, a problem that has grown by 50 percent since the 1970s. Today, as much as 40 percent of food produced in America is thrown away, amounting to 1,400 calories per person per day, $400 per person per year, and notably, 31 million tons of food added to landfills each year.

Throwing away food contributes directly to climate change as decomposing food releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is more than 20 times as effective at trapping atmospheric heat than carbon. According to the EPA, 17 percent of U.S. methane emissions come from landfills.

But a high rate of wasted food also means a high rate of the energy that goes into food production — the water, fuel and farmland needed to grow crops and produce meat — is also wasted. It's been estimated that 2 percent of all U.S. energy goes into food that American consumers and retailers are wasting.

Hump Day Inspiration

The opinion that is most important to your well being is your own. Never give up on yourself. Love yourself, believe in yourself. Think of all of the deeply painful and difficult things you have been through and how gracefully you have handled them. You can get through this. You can get through today. You are an incredible human being. The world loves you and so do we.

I love this! Remember my post about using cinnamon in your breakfasts a few weeks back? This is another great example of some simple spices you can incorporate into your meals that will give you LOTS of benis, not just help you lose weight.

Just a few things that I think of when I'm at the market!

1) If you have a question about the produce/meats/etc, don't hesitate to ask! These guys are pros at what they do— really. If there was anyone knowledgeable about food, its farmers at the markets.

2) Sample sample sample! Why not? These people want you to try their foods— might as well! Plus you may just get inspired to cook with a vegetable or fruit that you otherwise wouldn't have thought of!

3) Bring small bills & don't try to bargain. Just as a courtesy, bring small bills for these guys. Even if they do take cards, those machines are expensive to use and a little bit of a pain.

Also, don't try and bargain down any prices— they are normally reasonable in the first place. And even if that head of lettuce is $.35 more than the one at the store, you are supporting a small business. So it's worth it anyway.

4) If you are in the lovely city of Seattle, obviously you must visit the gum wall. And the original Starbucks. And the fish throwers. Basically everywhere.

Toodles Gluten

As many of you may remember, D & I gave up sugar last month. While I felt like a junkie coming off of decades of intense heroin use the first few days, it eventually got better and I learned to curb my chocolate and gummy cravings with more productive means (read: fruit).

Impressed with my own success of eliminating sugar for a month (but lezbehonest, I ate like a queen the first moment it was over), I have decided to give up another one of my vices for the month of June: gluten.

There is a lot of hype around gluten free living and while it interests me, I have never tried it. For this month I am going to try my darndest to give up gluten and replace it with alternatives like quinoa, but mostly just to eliminate my excessive starch intake and start having more leafy greens. Unlike the sugar challenge, I will document this challenge regularly and update you on my struggles (aka not having beer for ONE. WHOLE. MONTH. OF. SUMMER. I’m crazy, I just know it).

Wish me luck, and send me any good tips you might have!

:)

Oh I love that idea of an open water swim! Might be a little chilly in Puget Sound but maybe I’ll finagle a suit. Fab idea!
